Contextual Ad Networks...The Baby Boom Is Upon Us

No, this baby boom will certainly not swamp the Social Security system (sort of a bad joke for those that live in the United States, but many other countries...most notably Japan...have an even more acute problem), but this baby boom is revolutionizing the way that pay per click advertising is being spread across the Internet.

One of the early participants in this pay per click baby boom was Google, with its AdSense program. With this program, Google shares pay per click revenue with a huge number of individual partner websites that carry a few pay per click ads that are distributed by Google. In essence, this creates a whole bunch of little pay per click locations (websites) throughout the Internet and hence the term "pay per click baby boom".

Conceptually, programs like AdSense are similar to what the computer hardware folks refer to a distributed processing. Instead of trying to draw everyone to a large pay per click search engine site, little groups of pay per click ads are spread widely across thousands of locations (websites) all over the Internet.

Actually, this distributed processing or propagation technique is not limited to pay per click advertising. For example, Amazon uses a similar arrangement (called Amazon Associates) to sell the products it carries on amazon.com and ClickBank has a sales program called CBAdwords which operates in a similar fashion.

According my trusty Ouija board, it seems likely that most commercial hubs on the Internet will be shifting to this propagation concept as time progresses...all of those individual partner websites that carry the message/proposition will constitute the vast army of worker ants that keep the queen ant alive and healthy.

From a pay per click marketing perspective, these programs make brilliant use of leverage while providing highly targeted prospects for the paying advertiser.

There are, of course, some interesting things that occur as a result of all of this stuff. For example, consider what I call the "cross fertilization effect": Suppose a person goes to yahoo.com and performs a search that leads them to one of my websites that happens carry Google AdSense ads and that visitor then clicks on one of those ads...the net result is that Yahoo natural search provided Google pay per click with some revenue!
Aren't these fun times that we're living in?

As these programs continue to proliferate, the individual webmaster needs to exercise a little restraint and avoid the temptation to go overboard by plastering these ads all over your website and thereby diluting your own primary message/proposition and confusing your hard earned visitor. When properly used, these ads are just ancillary or complementary content that you are providing to enhance the information and opportunities that you are providing to your visitor...if something happens to strike a responsive chord with your visitor, you might make a little pay per click money.

If properly used, these propagation programs can result in the classical "win-win" situation. However, if you over do it, this can quickly turn into a loss for you (the individual webmaster) and a win for your pay per click partners that are distributing the ads. As in many things, moderation is important.

The dynamic search engine marketing industry continues to evolve as users began to take advantage of the steady stream of new features, tools and innovations provided by the ever increasing number of search engines offering quality search results (it's not all about Google anymore). The evolutionary time line for Internet marketing continues to run at warp speed.

An example of previous evolutionary periods (which by now may almost seem prehistoric) would be the emergence of pay-per-click advertising and the cooresponding rise of search-marketing firms specializing in AdWords and Overture. As long as there are methods for finding and retrieving information in digital databases by using keywords or similar attributes, there will be a search-marketing industry. How that industry operates in the future depends on how the search engines operate and how consumer tendencies evolve.

It's a constant sea of change, but the good things just keep on getting better! Stay alert, and light on your feet, and the opportunities will just keep on coming your way.

The above are just some observations from "the peanut gallery", but I don't think I'm far off the mark about where things are heading. With that, I'm off the soapbox and wishing you success in whatever you do online!

Fool Proof Steps To Catapult Your Adsense Income

The best ways for Website owners to make money from their website is through Google Adsense. There are so many site owners that are finding it difficult to make some good money from their websites. The irony is that there are some website owners that are earning hundreds of dollars every blessed day from Adsense ads placed on their websites. The difference between these website owners and the rest is that they act differently and they are known to think out of the box.

It has always being said that the best way to do anything in life is to ask those who have been doing that particular thing and learn how they have been doing it. Some of these BIG money makers in the Adsense game are willing to divulge their secrets to earning big from Google Adsense. Some of the tips they offered have helped in increasing the earnings of a lot of people that have applied these tips to their Adsense business.

Below are 5 proven secrets to improving your Adsense income.

1. Learn to concentrate on a format of Adsense ad. The format that worked best for so many is the Large Rectangle (336X280). This format has the likelihood of resulting in higher Click Through Ratio (CTR). Why is it advisable for you to choose this format out of the numerous formats available? This is because the ads on this format, will look like a normal link on your web pages and since your website visitors are used to clicking on these links, they will be attracted to click on your ads. Your website visitors may or may not know they are clicking on your Google ads, but what ever the case may be, you are the winner!

2. Let the Adsense ads match the look of your website. If you have a website with a white background, let white be the color of your ad border and background. This is to make the ads look like they are part of your web pages. As said earlier, this will get you more clicks from your website visitors.

3. Let the Ads be at the top of your web pages and not at the bottom. If they happen to be at the bottom, it is as if you are hiding the ads. Instead of hiding them at the bottom of the page, let them be in the place where people will see them as soon as they enter the page. You will be surprised at the difference this will make in your earnings.

4. Put your ads on pages that get maximum numbers of view. If you think some sites get more page views than the others, let your ads be on these pages! This is one proven method of increasing your Adsense earning. The more the page view, the more the likelihood for a click to be generated on your ads.

5. You should automate the insertion of your Adsense code into your web pages using SSI (or server side included). Enquire from your web administrator if your server supports SSI or not. How do you achieve this purpose? Save your Adsense code in a text file, you can save it as “Adsense.txt”, and upload it to the root directory of your web server. After uploading the file, you can then use SSI to call up the file on all of your web pages. This will save you a lot of time, especially if you use automatic page generators to create pages on your website.

Well, you now have in your hand the secrets that have generated so much money for hundreds of people who are making use of the Adsense business model. These tips can help you achieve a lot if only you are willing to make use of them.

If others have done it, there is nothing wrong trying it out for yourself.

This is to your Adsense Success,

If you are one of those people that has not had any luck with your pay per click search engine advertising, chances are you are not building your keyword advertising lists correctly. In order to get the most from google adwords, you have to know what keywords are going to work best for your field and what keywords are going to generate the most traffic. With these tips you will find your google adwords campaign will be made easy.

The first step to making a keyword list is to write down your targeted traffic and keywords you think suit them best. One of the easiest ways to do this is to think about how you would search for your product in the search engines. If you search for your product with these keywords, chances are hundreds of thousands of other people are doing the same thing.

Profitable keywords for your pay per click search engine advertising campaign can be found using the overture keyword suggestion tool. This will allow you to find what keywords are being searched the most, which will help you generate more traffic to your website. Place the top few keywords that you find in your titles of articles and blog posts, along with the first few sentences of the content on your website. The more you place the top keywords or targeted keywords on your website, the better chance you will have of climbing higher on the search engines.

Another great thing with a keyword suggestion tool like Overture is that you can find a large list of profitable keywords. This will allow you to build a list of multiple ways people are searching for the same product. If you can target multiple keywords, you will be able to have several lists on many of your pages. When you are choosing keywords, try and be as specific as possible. If you want to generate any kind of traffic that is specific to your site, you want to stay away from vague and basic keywords. By selecting specific keywords it lowers the competition you will face for the keyword and lower the cost per click you will be spending. How Can Google And Government Make You Rich

There are literally many easy ways to make money online - Google Adsense is one of the most popular methods. You partner with Google, they place ads on your websites and share the advertising revenue with you. Many people earn nice 6 figure income from Google Adsense alone.

You might be thinking: if Google adsense is that easy, why aren't more people become rich with it? The problem is, you need huge amount of quality and unique contents that attract visitors to your sites. Most people are not born writers. Let's say your goal is to put up 1 site per week, with 100-200 pages per site. Imagine the time and energy needed to complete the task! Sure you can hire writers, but it is not cheap. The going rate for average writer is $5/article. How much are you going to pay for 1000 pages of articles? Huge investment isn't it?

So, does it mean that you should give up Adsense altogether? Certainly not, because you are going to learn a secret on how government can help you to make money with Google Adsense!

Now what if I tell you, there are millions of free articles that you can legally rewrite, modify anyway you want, and even claim your authorship? These articles:

-cover many profitable Adsense niche, including iPod, finance, health, pets etc. -are written by professionals; -practically nobody is using or talking about this resource!

Drum rolls...

It's called "public domain" - Material that is not copyrighted, whose copyright has expired, or is un-copyrightable, including government publication, creative commons, and Wikipedia.

So what's so fascinating with Public domain? Simply but, you can take the contents from there, re-write it and put on your website without any problem! There are so many contents in government sites and Wikipedia. Don't believe? Do a search on Wikipedia and Google Government Search engine on ANY keyword.

For example, one of my favorite niche is health. It is a niche that is moderate in competition, high in searches. People are always looking for information on certain symptoms and disease. Most importantly health related keywords are one of those high paying Adsense keywords! It is very common to earn few dollars from just one click!

Now, at push button you will be able to find wide array of health articles in government websites, including diabetes, weight loss, sexual dysfunction etc. The articles are free for you to use.

There are people who sell articles to Adsense publishers. They called it PLR (Private Label Rights) articles where the articles rights belong to buyers' after the purchase. The average membership costs around $39-$97 per month for limited amount of articles. I am never a big fan of PLR articles. Simply but, why pay for something that is supposedly free?

Finally, one very important thing to keep in mind: always re-write the articles you take from public domain. Many webmasters have been de-listed for duplicate contents on their websites. If you want long term success with Adsense, unique articles is the way to go.

10 Great things NOT to do with Google AdSense

There is no question that you can make some good money with Google AdSense, but you’re setting yourself up for disaster if you make any of these Top 10 mistakes!

1. Do not use fake information when opening your Google AdSense account.

Google says that’s a no-no and they will cut your account off and keep all the money you may have earned. Besides, trying to hide your true identity can cause serious problems with the I.R.S. or whoever your tax authority is.

2. Do not hack or modify Google AdSense code other than to change the parameters that Google authorizes you to change.

Any attempt to bypass Google’s built-in algorithms not only poses a danger to the integrity of the network, but it threatens the financial modle that Google operates under. You’re not dealing with some Mom-and-Pop company here, and Google has the legal muscle and deep enough pockets to drag you through every court in the land if you damage their business with your hacking antics.

3. Keep AdSense ads off of your registration, confirmation, and all "thank you" pages.

Don’t ask me why you can’t put your ads there. It makes sense to me that those would be wonderful locations. Google thinks otherwise, however, and doing so is a hanging offense according to their Terms of Service.

4. Do not display AdSense ads and a competitor's ads (like Overture's) on the same page at the same time.

That just makes plain good sense. Google doesn’t demand 100% SITE loyalty from you, but they do insist that their own ads not be cluttered up by offerings from their competitors.

5. Don't "beg for clicks" or provide any incentive for clicking on your Google AdSense ads.

This is a biggie and you see this rule violated all the time. Any of the “get paid to do stuff” sites that put Google ads in the member’s control panels are walking the plank and they don’t even realize it. Even those sites with the polite little messages asking you to “help keep my site running by clicking on our sponsor’s ads” are asking to be cut off if those happen to be Google ads.

6. Never click on the ads running on your own site, even if you are genuinely interested in the product or service and are thinking of buying it!

Nothing screams FRAUD louder than a webmaster running up his or her own click counts by happily clicking on ads fromtheir own site. The Google Gods can track this activity and it won’t be long until you find yourself getting a goodbye note from their fraud team.

7. No misleading labeling

Google is very specific about what text can be placed around their ads. Their Terms of Service state: “Publishers may not label the ads with text other than ‘sponsored links’ or ‘advertisements.’ This includes any text directly above our ads that could be confused with, or attempt to be associated with Google ads.”

This is to keep visitors from becoming confused and barking up Google’s tree when they clicked on an ad that led to a porn site instead of the recipe site they were expecting to visit.

8. Avoid keyword spamming and other divisive tricks

You may be tempted to buy one of those “generates thousands of key-word rich pages in seconds” programs that are so popular these days but I’ll tell you this: Their days are numbered. Google is wise to such shenanigans and they will be hot on your trail. Other prohibited gimmicks include:

• ”Sneaky” page redirects that send a visitor off to a different site then they were expecting to visit.

• Multiple sites, domains, pages, etc. which have substantially duplicate content.

• Hidden text or links of any type.

• Excessive outbound links on any page. Google recommends no more than 100. I’d keep it way below that.

• And here is a nugget of wisdom straight from Google’s mouth: “Do not participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your website may be affected adversely by those links.

9. Don’t advertise anything on Google’s prohibited items list.

It’s a lot shorter lists than PayPal’s or eBay’s, but it includes a lot of the same stuff like hacking/cracking content, porn, illegal drugs, gambling sites, beer or hard alcohol (I guess wine is OK), weapons, and the other usual stuff.

10. And the 10th dumbest thing NOT to do with Google AdSense is to let the other nine things stop you from running an honest site that’s designed to make the most out of this very profitable opportunity that Google offers!

Why You Should Avoid Google's Content Network

When you create an AdWords campaign you have a choice as to whether you want your ads to appear on Google’s network of content sites. These are sites that have signed up for Google’s Adsense program, which allows them to display AdWords ads on their pages. Generally speaking, this is not very targeted traffic. Google tries to display your ad on pages with relevant content, and it does a pretty good job of it. Nonetheless, I personally do not like this traffic, and I will tell you why.

When marketing on the Internet, the sooner your ad is displayed to your prospect, the greater your chance of making a sale. This is the reason why search engine traffic performs so well. Most surfers initiate their Internet activity at a search engine. Indeed, many have a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or MSN set as their home page. In other words, it is the first thing they see when they log onto the Internet.

Lets take a closer look at the chain of events. A surfer logs onto the Internet because she wants to find something. She goes to Google and enters her search and among the results she sees your ad. It catches her attention and she clicks through to your site. Since you are offering exactly what she is looking for, she is turned into a customer and you make a sale. This scenario happened the way it did because we understand the virtues of targeted traffic, but it also happened because we were the first to satisfy the surfer’s needs.

Now, say the surfer has been online for some time and has been surfing from one site to another, looking around and possibly doing research. This surfer may be frustrated because she has not found what she wants, and is therefore in a negative mindset. What is more likely, however, is that this surfer has turned into a window shopper. Either way, since this surfer has been online for some time now, the result is she will be harder to convert into a sale.

When your site is shown on content sites it is being displayed to surfers who have often been online for a longer period of time and are generally not as receptive to your message. Add to this the fact that your ad will not be as targeted and your chances of converting the surfer are even less.

What we want is highly targeted traffic and we want that traffic to be receptive to our message. As that traffic becomes more and more diluted, its value diminishes as well.

One strategy that can be used with content targeting is to create a separate campaign for it. In this campaign all bids would be as low as possible, i.e. 5 cents. In this way you can display your ad on content sites, but the cost would be more in line with the traffic’s value. Keep in mind also that there is greater chance of click fraud when advertising on content sites, which is another good reason to keep bids as low as possible.

Google recently added a feature where you can bid separately on your content network ads, which allows you to bid lower on your content network ads without having to setup another campaign. This is useful and can be a good solution. I still prefer to create a separate campaign for content network advertising, however. A separate campaign allows for greater organization and analysis. This choice is one of personal preference, though, and you should use whichever option you feel more comfortable with.

In the end, you should be skeptical about content targeting, as the traffic quality will not be the same as the pure search engine traffic. If you really want the extra traffic, then make sure you bid separately for your content site campaign, keeping your bids as low as possible. You should also keep a close eye on your stats to make sure you are not paying for any fraudulent clicks. Good luck.

Optimizing Google Adsense For Better Performance And More Money!

So you want to make money with Google Adsense? I don't blame you, who doesn't want residual income! This article will show you how to better optimize Google Adsense to make more money from your web site(s).

Before we get into it, learn more about Google Adsense here:
http://www.google.com/services/adsense_tour/

First and foremost is: Positioning

Where you position your Adsense link boxes and banner ads is extremely important. Trying to make money from the bottom of your pages within your website just won't cut it. You need to add your Adsense links right in the heart of your template or right in the heart of your content. I would personally suggest both actually.

Adding Adsense in the heart of your template:

Link Units:

Since the introduction of Google Adsense "link units", we can now add what looks like a "menu system" to compliment our menu system within our website. This is HUGE. Have you ever just clicked on a website and kept clicking on the menu links? I know we all have. By adding a "Google link units" to your menu, you will get more clicks than you thought possible. Try adding the link units near the top for better performance and try creating your link units to match the color of your menu system in place. Once in a while I find myself clicking on a menu link unit without even realizing it which in turn gives more money to the website owner.

Leaderboards & Skyscrapers:

These may very well be your "bread & butter". I only say this because of the sheer size of these ads units. The best place to add these ad units is obvious; Straight across the very top of your website (leaderboards), and straight down the side of your template (skyscrapers). Anywhere else may not look proper within your template and may look unprofessional.

Square & Rectangle Ad Units:

These are great to compliment the mass amount of content within your website and also within your recommended resources. You want to compliment your content, you don't want Adsense to BE your content because this will look poor on your part. Adsense is very popular with webmasters; who doesn't want to make some extra money. However, don't forget that many of your visitors are also used to seeing Adsense within a website, and need a good reason to click on them.

Square and rectangular units are great to use within articles posted on your website or within your link resources. Try adding your Adsense boxes above your resource links within a page to give your Adsense account that added extra exposure.

Just remember that Google allows up to 3 ad units per page. Using these 3 strategies will help to better optimize Adsense for positioning! Let's now go onto targeting...

Optimizing Adsense: Taking out non-related ads!

Do you ever wonder how ads like "business card specials" ever get displayed on to your website when your company content is all about baby clothing? Since the introduction of "Adwords Site Targeting", we now have to keep an eye on the ads being displayed on our website(s). Companies may now specifically target your website for more exposure. There is no restriction whether the website is content related or not, just more marketing exposure for the advertiser.

Filtering Adsense Advertisers:

Within your Adsense manager, you have the option of using the "Competition Filter" which allows us to remove certain websites from the ads being displayed regularly. This is going to be an on-going optimization task in the future. Without filtering the ads being displayed within your website, you might find yourself with ads unrelated to your industry and possibly some ads that have a negative effect within your site.

If you don't remove all the unwanted ads being displayed on your website, you might end up hurting your Adsense performance online. The more targeted you can get your Google Adsense ads to display on each page, the better your chances at being able to make more money. Try to take a moment every week to study the ads being displayed on your website.

Open up a note pad, or word document and record all the websites you don't want to be displayed anymore. Add these sites to your "filter list" within your Adsense account.

Remember to add the website (within your filter list) like so: smartads.info - without the www. Adding anything after or before the url will only prevent the company from displaying one of their many ads like so (www.site.com/ads/1.html). This way you stop anything from the entire website from showing up within your Adsense campaign online. The more you optimize your Adsense filter, the better your performance will pick up and the less non-related ads will be displayed on your website.

One constant that holds true with Adsense:

The more pages you have with your Adsense campaign being displayed, the more you WILL make. People who have online networks immediately can profit from Google Adwords because they have the power to add their Adsense boxes & banners onto multiple websites, possibly 1000's of pages.

Should you add Adsense to your website?

If you own a small company that has a brochure type website that gets maybe 50-100 visitors a day, I recommend NOT adding Adsense to your site. It will never make enough money with that kind of traffic. Remember: Your Adsense campaign needs to make over $100 to get paid out.

If your company receives around 500-1000+ visitors a day, you can now start considering to make money through Google. Adsense is all about numbers. Play the numbers to make more money. In fact, try making goals for yourself to make X amount of dollars through your Adsense account by a certain time. Doing this will only increase your business and make your company more powerful online by increasing the amount of traffic it receives.

For multiple websites, channels are important:

Google allows you to track the performance of multiple websites all in one account which ultimately gives you the ability to track how many visitors you're getting for each website. It also allows you to work harder on those sites that aren't up to par.

I consistently look at each individual website channel to work harder at promoting the ones that aren't performing well. By doing this, we increase the amount of promotion going into the websites that under perform, and in turn eventually increase the business for those websites as well. The more you promote your website, the more the exposure you will ultimately deliver for your Adsense campaign and your company.

Google Search with Adsense:

To top all that off, you can add Google search within your site to give visitors a search function for your content and to allow people to also click on your Adsense program. Please note that for Google search to work, your website and all of its content pages must already be indexed by Google. Adding the Google search bar to your site right away won't help your visitors at all.

4 Things That Pay Per Clickers Should Know

With so many different vehicles to use when advertising online, Pay Per Clicks are definitely one of the most popular. There are mixed feelings about the topic....seasoned veterans in marketing will side with PPC's while others equally as successful will frown on it.

1. Use very specific words when bidding....

When you are selecting your words for your PPC options , it is ALWAYS best to be as specific as possible. You should never be "vague". If you choose words that are vague like "car", "television", "movies", etc., you will have wasted clicks that cost you money. The strategy is to be more specific, such as, "1997 Gray Chevy Malibu", 19 inch Panasonic HDTV", "Rocky IV", etc. You MUST be specific to get the most for your money!

2. Pick your PPC choice(s) focused.....

When you are choosing which PPC to use, obviously there are some things to consider. No matter who you go with, stay focused and don't get spread out. It's better to be focused on a fewer than semi-focused on many. Track everything and experiment with keywords minimally.

3. Don't overdraw yourself....

I know from my own experience that the drive to out bid your opponent is very strong and in some cases , it may be stronger than your ability to utilize your funds wisely. It is very important to stick within your budget. Sometimes the high priced words may NOT be what you need/want anyway so stick to your guns and don't overdraw your account by letting your emotions get the best of you.

4. Always track your ads, regardless of where or how you advertise

One of the great benefits about operating online is the ability and accessibility to track your ads. It is possible to track every single anything that happens and if you are not doing so , you should be. You can create free accounts that are adequate if necessary so don't exclude tracking for ANY reason.

Usually, if you experiment enough with PPC's, you will find them to be a solid advertising method. It is a personal choice so I recommend that you do whatever gets you the most targeted traffic. You can never have enough targeted traffic so utilize any method that fits into your budget.

So there are many things to consider with PPC's, those are just a few. Hope this was helpful to some. Take care and God Bless.

Easy Steps To Hands Off Passive Income

So you want to increase your Adsense income? Log into your Adsense account, and look at your last month's stats. There are three key areas that contribute to your earnings: Impressions, Clickthroughs and Effective CPM. Improving your stats in any, or preferably, all of these three key areas will increase your Adsense earnings.

Impressions

Impressions are the number of times your webpages with Adsense ads have been viewed. You can increase Impressions by increasing traffic (preferably targeted traffic) to your webpages. Some of the best ways to increase targeted traffic to your webpages include:

-create more webpages, with relevant, focused content
-create more links to your webpages
-list your website/s under relevant categories in more directories
-set up a directory of relevant sites on your website and accept relevant
reciprocal links
-write relevant articles, with your site information in the 'resource box' at the end of each article, and submit them to article directories
-advertise with pay per click search engines like Google's Adwords. www.Miva.com (formerly www.FindWhat.com, www.YahooMarketing.com (formerly Overture) and 100's of others. When of the best places for pay per click info is www.payperclicksearchengines.com with a descriptive list of 659 search engines.

Clickthroughs

Clickthroughs are the percentage of viewers who click on your Adsense ads. You can increase Clickthroughs by increasing the relevance of Adsense ads on your site, and by tweaking the format and placing of your ads.

Although you can't dictate which Adsense ads show on your site, you can
influence the relevance of the ads by maintaining a tightly focused website. If every page on your site focuses tightly on the site topic, its more likely that the Adsense ads will too. For example, if every page of your site is about fishing, and the word 'fishing' appears several times on every page, its likely that your Adsense ads will relate to fishing.

The best way to tweak your ad format and placement is to invest in an Adsense Tracker, and test, test, test! People who have done this tend to suggest that the best format is the large rectangle, with background and border the same color as the page behind it, so that the ad blends into the page. The best placement is towards the center or top left of the first screen of the page. Try these suggestions first, and then track and test, to be sure of what works best for your pages.

Effective CPM

Effective CPM is a measure of your average earnings, per thousand clicks. You can increase your Effective CPM by selecting topics that attract high bids from Adsense advertisers, and building pages and whole websites on higher paying topics.

Although Google doesn't release information on Adsense bids, you can get a good idea of the top paying topics by looking at information on Adwords bids, or, for that matter, bids on pay-per-click search engines like Overture. There are a number of keyword research tools available, both free and paid, that can help you find high paying topics.

The Formula

So now you have the basics of increasing your Adsense income. Its a deceptively simple formula:

-Build pages and websites on high paying topics for the best Effective CPM.
-Format and place your Adsense ads for maximum Clickthroughs.
-Promote your sites to drive targeted traffic to your Adsense webpages for maximum impressions.

Pay-Per-Click Search Engines – The Basics

Search engine optimization can take a long time to show results. The Google sandbox alone can delay optimization results by 6 to 8 months. So, what can you do to get traffic while you wait? Pay-per-click [“PPC”] campaigns fill the time gap. This article discusses the basics of PPC advertising.

What Is A PPC?

A PPC search engine allows you to bid for placement in search results. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and most others bolster their organic search results with sponsor advertisements. If you search on Google, links in blue across the top and the little ads down the right side of the search results are PPC listings. In one form or another, similar listings appear on every major search engine.

How Does It Work?

When you use a PPC, you will bid for placement in the search results under particular keywords. Instead of optimizing your site to appear high in the listings, you simple pay for the position. While this may sound great, keep in mind you are paying for the listing and have to watch the return on investment closely.

To get started, you must open an account with the PPC in question. The two biggest PPCs are Google Adwords and Overture. You will need to register with the PPC, provide a credit card number and, depending on the PPC, deposit money into the account. Next, create ads with a title, body text and link to the landing page of your site. The title of each ad should correspond to a particular keyword you want to promote. If at all possible, include the keyword in the actual title. Finally, you will be asked to bid on placement in the search results.

Bidding for placement is not as simple as it my sound. Ideally, your ad should be in the top 3, but never below the 10th position. This has to be balanced, however, by the return on investment of the campaign. If you sell a product that produces a $10 dollar profit per sale, you probably can’t afford to pay $.90 per click. If your site converts 1 visitor out of every 100 into a sale, you will spend $90 for every sale. Obviously, that is going to work out very well. The one caveat to this situation is a business with reoccurring revenue.

If you site charges clients a reoccurring monthly fee, you can bid in excess of your immediate profit margin. To do this safely, you must determine how long the average customer will stay on your site. For example, if you make a $10 profit per month and the average customer pays for 5 months, the total profit is $50. In this situation, you can spend $20 or $30 to obtain a customer and still turn a profit. To properly manage a PPC campaign for a reoccurring charge site, you must recalculate the profit per customer ever week to protect yourself.

PPC Cons

Why not just use a PPC campaign instead of pursuing search engine optimization? There are a number of reasons. First, you are paying for each click with a PPC, which requires a budget and may impact your cash flow. Second, PPC bidding is competitive and that translates into higher costs, so much so that a profit may be hard to make. Third, many people simply do not click on PPC ads with the figure being as high as 20 percent. Fourth, you run the risk of having people click on your ads with no intention of buying, whether they are just browsing or are trying to exhaust your advertising budget.

PPCs definitely have a place in the online marketing field. Manage your campaigns with an eye for detail and you should fine.
